“Don’t think of him as a Doctor,

think of him as a good friend”

Dear Doctor Cole,

I am a 28 year old R&B loving male living in the Seattle area.  Since moving here from Chicago last year, with my wife of two years, we have had a hard time finding good music, that is, finding R&B music That is true to it’s roots.  This is really quite a shocking dilemma, as we understood Seattle to be somewhat a music mecca, and one of our main reasons for moving to the Northwest.  Most of the club bands in the area seem to play either an annoying form of  thrash rock (stuck on Cobain and Vetter) led by wimpy- whiney singers or “wanna be” Motown cover bands that are obviously going through soulless motions.  My problem is this;

    My wife and I have always enjoyed a healthy sex life.  Our weekend evenings would begin dining on spicy Tai, or “quality” Italian food in some romantic, out of the way inner city spot, followed by a few pints at one of Chicago’s many clubs off Rush Street, listening and dancing to one of the many fabulous R&B groups that call Chicago home.  The Driving, undulating beats those groups provided evoked deep primal feelings within both of us, and an almost satyristic quality within myself.  Those bands became what was truly the catalyst for my wife’s and my many nights of bliss, but since moving to the Northwest, that has all but disappeared, and I am now accepting that the problem is primarily mine.

    I’ve tried everything.  I play Paul Butterfield on the way to dinner in the car, I’ve stayed plugged into a continuous loop of quality R&B on my IPod, even while sleeping, and finally, in a last ditch effort, I made a visit to one of those chain medical centers who promise “Results Tonight”, but to no avail.  The pills they gave me put a healthy glow in my cheeks, but that’s the only place I was glowing, if you know what I mean.  This is way too early in life for this to be  happening to me.  I am desperate and I’m hoping you might have an answer for me.

Thank you in advance,

Despondent in Seattle

Dear Despondent,

Although you may feel like it, you are far from the only male to suffer a loss in his romantic life due to a lack of live, potent R&B music. Let’s call this syndrome “Rhythm and Blues Dysfunction”, or “R&B-D”.

Some of your attempts to remedy your particular case of R&B-D are commendable and are on the right track, but recordings of classic R&B alone are usually ineffective. You need a steady diet of live “thank-you-may-I-have-another” funky and gritty Rhythm and Blues music; the sooner, the better.  However, as you observed, the supply of the aforementioned entertainment is not always readily available in the northwest corner of the US. That’s why we at the Freddy Pink Institute have begun to take the treatment for R&B-D to various performance venues in this area and others. As soon as possible, attend a live performance of Freddy Pink, and repeat as often as possible. If you follow this prescription, I think you’ll find a very positive change in your situation.
